40 Years of Educate Together

For the past forty years Educate Together has worked to make the Irish education system more equitable and inclusive. We want to make sure we can do the same for the next forty but we need your help!

Since our inception in 1978, in the form of Dalkey School Project, Educate Together has been committed to the very simple ideal of an education system where no child is an outsider. And so, for the past forty years, our school communities have sought to create a culture of belonging through our learner-centered, equality-based school model and ethical education curriculum.

As a supporter of Educate Together, you are no doubt someone who shares our commitment to fostering such a culture and believe that all children should have access to an excellent education that is inclusive of everyone, irrespective of belief system, race, ethnicity, class, culture, gender, language, lifestyle or ability; that no child should be made to feel like they don’t belong.

From that first school the Educate Together network has grown steadily, there are now 81 primary schools and 9 secondary schools nationwide operating under the Educate Together banner. Despite this growth, parental demand still far outstrips the places currently available in our schools, with many locations having no alternative to religious-run schools.

We would love nothing more than to establish equality-based schools wherever there is demand but unfortunately, funding is a real issue. Depending on its size, opening a new school costs anywhere from €60,000 to €100,000 and government grants cover less than 20% of those costs. So long as this remains the situation, Educate Together remains dependent on the kindness and generosity of our supporters to help bridge the gap between grants and costs.

As someone who shares our belief that every child should have the opportunity to learn and grow in an inclusive, democratic, co-educational setting, will you consider supporting Educate Together with a monthly direct debit gift today? Monthly donations, no matter how small, help put us in a stable financial position and allow us to focus on ensuring that families have the opportunity to choose a school community reflective of their own values.

Becoming a regular contributor to Educate Together couldn’t be easier, simply follow this link. While €21 is the suggested donation, any amount you can afford would be enormously appreciated. Thank you so much for your continued support of Educate Together.
