Statement on Responsible Pet Ownership Lesson Plans

Educate Together regularly works with partners to develop resources to support its Ethical Education curriculum. Recent projects have involved Plan Ireland and Social Entrepreneurs Ireland. In this case we were approached by professionals working in the animal welfare field about the need to address the issue of responsible pet ownership in Irish schools. We agreed to establish a project to develop resources in this important area if funding could be arranged. As well supporting the objectives of the Learn Together curriculum, this project is aligned with efforts to improve the culture of animal welfare in the country as a whole, as echoed in recent government policy.

The DoneDeal Foundation volunteered to finance the project, which involved Educate Together curriculum experts developing the resources and piloting them in schools, with technical oversight and assistance from ISPCA, DogsTrust and Veterinary Ireland. The Foundation imposed no conditions on Educate Together in relation to this work and Educate Together is very grateful for the financial support the project received.

Educate Together is very happy with the quality of the lesson plans produced through this project. They are a fantastic resource, now available to any teacher or educator in Ireland. We believe that by becoming involved in lessons directly addressing responsible pet ownership and by educating children in the care and upkeep of domestic animals, we can contribute in a meaningful and long-term way to animal welfare.

Educate Together notes that a number of issues have been raised regarding the commercial activities of DoneDeal. These should be addressed to DoneDeal.
