Aoife O’Sullivan, Greystones ETNS
Over the last year Greystones Educate Together NS (GETNS ) has become part of The Incredible Edible initiative. This initiative encourages schools across the country to get busy growing all sorts of lovely foods, including carrots, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries, turnips and herbs.
The aim of the project is to gradually build and grow a strong community, involving everyone in the school: kids, staff, parents, teaching and non-teaching staff. Last year, each class in GETNS was given different types of vegetables to plant and grow in our school garden.
At the beginning of this school year, the vegetables were harvested. All the vegetables, flowers and herbs grown were then free to bring home for everyone in the community. Yann Siete, a parent in GETNS and current Parents Association Committee member helped to coordinate all our gardening initiatives. The pupils in our school love nature and have shown great interest in gardening and growing fresh fruit and vegetables.
This project also really helped support our Green School Pupil Committee in achieving our Biodiversity Flag last month too. We are excited to have Incredible Edible as a community focus this year, building a keen sense of community and promoting collaboration and a love for fresh air and healthy living for our wonderful pupils.
