This year Castaheany Educate Together NS is taking part in a new reading programme called Time to Read.
Here’s a note from School Principal Mary Healy on the programme:
“This year Castaheany Educate Together NS is taking part in a new reading programme called ‘Time to Read’. It is part of the Schools Business Partnership and we are delighted that our chosen partner is the Institute of Technology in Blanchardstown. This programme runs for 24 weeks in the school and aims to develop a love of reading and encourage the children to become independent readers. The volunteer readers are all employees from ITB and they will come to the school each week, for an hour, to read with some children from 2nd Class. The programme will also involve school staff and parents and will include visits to Blanchardstown library and ITB. The ‘Time to Read’ programme was launched at the school on Wednesday 17th October and we’re really looking forward to having lots of fun with books!”
Students from the school attended the launch:
“It was lovely event and the children are very excited and eager to get going. Parents are also very pleased about this great literacy programme. We have 10 reader volunteers participating and all are employees at ITB. Parents, school and ITB staff and, of course our 10 chosen pupils attended the launch today. Our local librarian, Marguerite, from Blanchardstown library also came along to support the initiative. The programme involves a couple of trips to the library with staff, pupils and parents. The children were presented with lovely souvenir pencil cases and markers from ITB and then they brought our visitors on a tour of the school and were wonderful tour guides!”
The aims of the programme are:
- To increase the enjoyment of reading
- To increase confidence in reading
- To improve and encourage self discovery
- To improve fluency and comprehension when reading
